Domino Qiu Qiu: Indonesia’s Version of Poker

Domino qiu qiu, or kiu kiu, is a form of dominoes that is popular in Indonesia. This game is related to pai gow, a Chinese gambling game. Domino qiu qiu may also be referred to as “99 domino poker.” This game is played with 28 double-six dominoes, which in Indonesia, are usually small cards that are easily discarded. The game is often played with 2-4 players, like seen on IDN Poker.

Domino qiu qiu players are usually required to pay a fixed bet into a pot and are then dealt three domino cards. After evaluating the cards, each player can either bet, call, raise or fold. The player may bet if there is no previous bettor or call or raise if there is a previous bettor. The game ends after the first round if there was only one bettor who then wins the pot without having to show his cards. If this does not happen, all players who did not fold are dealt a fourth card which leads to a second and final round of betting. After the final round of better, each player who did not fold must expose his cards and declare his hand. The player with the highest hand then wins the pot. After this, cards a formed into pairs and the pips on each pair are summed so that only the units last digit is considered, for example 13 becomes 3 or 25 becomes 5. The highest possible pair is 9. The highest pair is compared first followed by the second pair. Four special hands ranking above a pair of nines are high, low, four doubles, and straight. High is when the total pips on four dominoes are equal to or above 38. Low is when total pips on four dominoes are equal to or below 9. Four doubles is self-explanatory in that it means four double dominoes. Straight is when four dominoes have consecutive pip totals, for example 2-1 (3), 2-2 (4), 3-2 (5), 3-3 (6). If two players have a straight, then the higher hand is the one with the higher double, or the highest straight if neither player has a double.

This game uses mathematics and critical thinking in determining when to bet or fold. It requires players to have good skills in the game as well as luck when trying and learning different tricks and strategies. The game is played somewhat different online than it is played in the traditional in-person game. In the online version, players also place a small bet before playing then are given five tiles/dominoes that will lie face down. Each player is given five tiles regardless of how many players are in the game. The players also play in a counter-clockwise position, similar to poker. Each player has five options, raising, folding, checking, calling or betting. Checking is when the player wants to stay in the game but not place any more stakes. Domino qiu qiu is available to play online or download to a PC, Android phone, Google phone or iPhone.
